You hear a lot about Texas in the eighties and all of the legendary bands that came out of the punk rock scene in that state (ranging from Really Red to the Big Boys to the Dicks). Often overlooked (for some insane reason) is Austin Texas’ Offenders. The Offenders were the closest thing that city had to a pile driving hi octane type of band… like if Iron Maiden and Motörhead combined forces and decided to play fast hardcore punk rock. The singer J.J. spit out lyrics like “if you don’t like the way I look, if you don’t like the way I think, fuck you. Cause I’m going to do what I want” in a way that completely fit with the sound, and didn’t sound stupid. The Offenders were rebel music. This savage band disbanded in 1986 after two singles and two albums. Bizarrely and tragically, only drummer Pat Doyle is still alive out of the four of them. We thank Pat for okaying this and helping us out in keeping the Offenders name out there. The Offenders were a monster band of the time period that shouldn’t be overlooked or forgotten. -Brian Walsby
