Superchunk

In 1991 I discovered that if I fiddled with the antenna and tuning knob long enough, I could pick up NC State’s radio station (WKNC) on my boom box (40 miles away) in rural Nashville, NC. I used to record their “Nightwave” programing on cassette every Thursday as they played lots of punk and alternative stuff that you couldn’t hear anywhere else (around those parts) at the time. One night they premiered Superchunk’s “No Pocky For Kitty” in it’s entirely. Over the next few years I wore that tape out. I was blown away that they were from only an hour away in Chapel Hill; especially when I saw the video for “Throwing Things” introduced by Dave Kendal on MTV’s 120 Minutes. I remember going into Schoolkids Records on Franklin St. and being completely star struck and surprised to see Mac working there. I mean… this guy was on 120 Minutes! He was a star!  This was around the same time that my parents started letting me drive to shows at the Cat’s Cradle; another Franklin St. hot spot in Chapel Hill. My friends and I would drive an hour to cram into that tiny space and be completely terrified, inspired, and blown away by Jesus Lizard, Fugazi, Firehose, and of course… Superchunk.

Ron Liberti and The Cat’s Cradle have enjoyed a symbiotic relationship for as long as I can remember. I’ve seen Ron’s band Pipe play the Cradle on numerous occasions. Ron also designs and hand screens posters for tons of shows at this iconic venue. This design is from one of those posters. We’ve been offering it as a t shirt for a couple years now and I thought it would make for a cool pin and sticker.  –Charles Cardello/ Bifocal Media
