I have been intensely fascinated by owls since I was a child. When I was 9, and long before the whole ‘birds aren’t real’ thing began, my then-best friend Steve Easley confided in me during a backyard overnight camp out that owls and bats weren’t real, that they were actually robots with wings that were spying on us. This was in 1970, and while I’m sure there were conspiracy theorists amongst us back then, Steve may have been the first 9-year-old one. I’ve often wondered where he came up with that theory.

I began drawing owls right around the time I started drawing hot rods, rocket ships and astronauts. NASA and the Apollo Space program were being talked about by everyone and everywhere you looked, space-related things popped up on TV, in the toys and on cereal boxes. Eventually, I grew bored with drawing the space stuff but I continued trying to get my owls to look more realistic. It never happened.

Maybe it was my love for the film Yellow Submarine and its surrealistic animation that helped shape the way I started drawing and still draw things, owls included. I’ve always struggled at drawing realistic beaks, feathers, and talons so I just came up with my own way to draw them, and that sticks with me to this day.

When I picked up acrylic and watercolor painting in the early 2000s, I hadn’t been drawing owls.  Cats, robots and weird people with long necks and enormous eyes and mouths seemed to be my jam. It wasn’t until 2015 or so that I became interested in owls again. It took me a while to come up with a style that pleased my eyeballs, but right away, I discovered a fairly obscure 7×14-sized canvas that was perfectly suited for my owls.

I was very excited when Charles suggested I do an owl for a Bifocal Media t-shirt design. I love Charles’ vision and everything that carries the BFM brand and am honored to get to do an owl shirt through them. -Kevin Seconds
