We faced some major losses in 2021 and one of the most upsetting was the death of Biz Markie. Biz’s sense lovable personality and sense of humor offered an unwavering bright spot in hip hop since he began in the early 80’s. Biz couldn’t help but bring a smile to your face. From his unconventional delivery, his song’s subject matter to his peerless beatboxing; Biz was truly like no other.

As a high school teacher, almost all of the artwork I do is for musicians that my students have no clue about. It’s different with Biz. Every single high schooler I have met knows “Just a Friend”, or his appearance in MIB 2, or his segment on The Aquabats Super Show, or his unforgettable cameo as Kenny the Cat in Sponge Bob. Bottomline: Biz’s work has managed to become part of our general pop culture knowledge. He’s an icon and indeed “Nobody Beats the Biz”. To be granted permission to do this shirt through Biz’s widow, Tara Hall, really is profoundly amazing to me. To pay tribute to the legend with an illustartion that makes me smile is the best way i can say “thank you” for the work Biz put out into the world.  -Chris Shary
