I met Sam around 2003 in Greenville, NC. At the time he fronted the brilliantly named “Art Lord and the Self Portraits”. I remember being blown away by his unique and commanding presence as the band’s front man. His voice and delivery were also instantly memorable; a mix of (over the top) tension, soulful crooning, and pained growls that oozed with sincerity and confidence. In 2006, Future Islands was formed with Sam as the front man. They did a little recording, moved to Baltimore, and set out on a vigorous touring schedule; putting put out records on Thrill Jockey and eventually signing to 4AD. Sam and Co became household names in 2014 with an appearance on The Late Show that left David Letterman so impressed, he referenced it for weeks to come. Their performance made the internet go crazy and Sam’s mug and dance moves became an instant part of American pop culture. THEN (in perhaps an even more improbable feat) Sam’s Emcee persona (Hemlock Ernst) became an underground Hip Hop sensation and recorded with my favorite producer: MADLIB. WHAT!???

I mentioned this shirt idea to Chris Shary a while ago. While this one falls outside of his usual iconic Punk subject matter, we both agreed that a Sam Herring Tee needed to happen. We’re glad Sam agreed! -Charles Cardello/ Bifocal Media
