We’re fortunate and honored to be working with Laughing Hyenas on this tribute to their late guitar player Larissa Strickland. I thought it would be a cool idea to draw something that featured only her and here it is. I would like to thank Hyenas alumni John Brannon and Kevin Monroe for their encouragement in making this shirt a reality.

These guys were a good answer to the question: “what do you do next after the first wave of hardcore becomes boring as shit”? Lots of bands answered this question; from Melvins to Redd Kross to Sonic Youth to Honor Role to Dinosaur Jr. and beyond. Michigan’s Laughing Hyenas answered with John Brannon (formerly of Negative Approach) taking his formidable bellow into a sort of Birthday Party meets the blues shriek. The result was pummeling, gnarly and (any way you slice it) a thousand times more intense then “one two/ one two three four” punk rock songs.

After sort of a slow warm up twelve inch e.p. the band released  the YOU CAN”T PRAY A LIE album and the band was on their way. Teetering on the edge of total collapse, the Hyenas (rounded out initially with bassist Monroe and drummer Jim Kimball) had the rep of being a dangerous band filled with some nice people. Following that album came the LIFE OF CRIME album and then eventually the first of a few lineup changes, resulting in Ron and Todd of the NECROS stepping in to do the HARD TIMES album. ‘Less intense but still good, the band soldiered on from 1985-1995.

The Laughing Hyenas were one of my favorite bands from this era, and we are very happy to be able to do this. RIP Larissa.-Brian Walsby
