Product Description
I first heard of the Italian band Raw Power on the Maximum Rock N Roll compilation “WELCOME TO 1984”. Tucked away on the record was the song F%$K Authority” by Raw Power. It had it all: killer drumming, harsh vocals, lots of cowbell and this crazy overdubbed bass part that was five times louder than the rest of the track. Amongst a bunch of other great songs, the Raw Power one really stood out.
Discovering Raw Power opened up the doors to finding other Italian bands like Indigesti, Wretched, Cheetah Chrome Motherf$%kers and Negazione. They toured the States and I ended up seeing them like five times between 1984 and 1987. The band had an almost Bad Brainsesque level of intensity back then, making them a great live band.
Raw Power’s SCREAMS FROM THE GUTTER is still one of the greatest hardcore albums of all time. Captured with KILLER PRODUCTION from the Zero Boys Paul Mahern; the record blazes with songs about state oppression, hating the police, rioting, nihilism, and factories burning to the ground (hence this idea for this t shirt). Urgent vocals from two singers, Yngwie type guitar playing, and powerhouse drumming take this record into “way beyond good” territory.
I also want to acknowledge the BCT cassette tape (remember them?) that came out before the Screams album: less metal, still pile driving versions of the songs and in a pre Davide lineup with Silvio providing the harsh vocals. This is another great recording.
Raw Power is still a great band; going through different members and continuing to release albums. They even soldiered on after the loss of founding member Guissepe Codeluppi, who passed away in the early 2000’s. That is him holding the torch that was passed to his brother Mauro. A little symbolism there. I am thrilled to be able to do a Raw Power shirt and I want to thank Mauro for letting this happen and of course Charles for agreeing to do this. I love Raw Power. And yes, they named their band after that Stooges record. Duh. -Brian Walsby
