Neos

The Neos were this little blip on my screen of early eighties punk rock hardcore mail correspondence. It was an era of writing letters, reading fanzines, being a goofy nerd and loving this new fast weird music. This young trio hailed from Victoria Canada. They played super fast teenage hardcore pre-having sex sort of music, in the same universe as Deep Wound and first twenty two song seven inch era DRI. They were total pioneers. They were freinds with NoMeansNo and actually introduced them to the world (true story). They had two seven inches released in their short lifetime and they broke up by sometime in 1983.

Neos remain this little amazing secret; the pioneers of super tight ultra fast hardcore that would show up later in a lot of other people’s sub genres. Everyone from Jello Biafra to J.Mascis to Fat Mike acknowledges the fury of the Neos. I made a homemade Neos t shirt of them as a kid, walking around wearing it in my home town proudly like I was actually going to run into someone who knew who the heck they were.

So… decades later, to sort of befriend guitarist Stephen Bailey and through that, doing an actual  GODDAMN OFFICIAL NEOS T-SHIRT is an effing THRILL!!! Thanks to both Steve and Charles for allowing this to happen. -Brian Walsby
