Sometimes I have an image in my head and painting is the only way to get it out, to show anyone else what I pictured or was thinking. I honed my skills to make that possible. There was another skill to hone too: Learning when to let go; when to let the paint and surface lead me somewhere instead of just leading it. That’s how Hanford #41 was born. I had a picture in my head. Then I let it go, and everything flowed. Sometimes I think the paintings already exist on some other plane, and I’m just their doorway.
The environmental disaster at the Hanford Site in Washington State, the on-going tragedy, the health ramifications, the loss…I hope to give the victims voice, and maybe inspire you to learn more about what happened in hopes it never happens again. -Chris Mars
