The Last stage drive I did was Feb 10, 1987 at a DRI show in London. “Couch Slouch” was my jam and when they lurched into it, off the stage I flew. The crowd parted and so did my bottom lip. DRI were on tour for “Crossover” and it was their first trip into Europe. They were arguably the fastest and most furious band on the planet at that moment in time. I honestly thought they would self destruct from playing at that speed for that amount of time. When the show ended I wrote Spike to do an interview for my budding fanzine BURLY OBSESSION and to my surprise he wrote back! I recall having drawn up a t-shirt idea for the band but it was so crude, I’m not sure if I ever even sent it to them. As it turns out, the band did not self destruct from playing at breakneck speeds. Instead, they managed to soldier on and get bigger and bigger. While that was happening, my art skills got better as well. Flash forward to 2020. I began the new year thinking of my wish list of bands I haven’t worked with yet and one of the top of the list was a DRI. Yeah, but what did I have to offer? I pondered the idea for quite a while until the idea of a skanking skeleton in the exact position of their logo seemed to be perfect. The 16 year old me cannot believe I actually got to a point where I was able to work with the band, but here we are. Not ready for a tattoo of this yet? No worries, you can buy the shirt, and change it whenever you want to! -Chris Shary
