Jello Biafra

When I first heard “Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables” I was more than a little scared. I must have been 13 or so and I thought that maybe I had stumbled across the most dangerous band in the world, certainly the most intelligent and deep. I could not process what I was hearing. Not only was it very musically dense and challenging, but the lyrical content was blowing my mind. Who was this singer who called himself Jello Biafra? The more I listened, the more I loved it. Jello was simply hypnotic, like what I imagined a Native American Shamen must be like. It’s no exaggeration to say that the Dead Kennedys and their label Alternative Tentacles, which Biafra co-founded with fellow DK guitarist East Bay Ray, were some of the most important forces in the early hardcore 80’s. Both had traveled deep into Europe and were easily available on a more global level. Visionary in those early days. Much like DEVO some of those early predictions Biafra had made have surely come to pass. Here we are 40 years later since the Dead Kennedys formed and Jello is still a major force in the punk rock community having collaborated with bands like D.O.A., The Melvins, and NOMEANSNO, still running Alternative Tentacles, still doing spoken word performances, and doing some really wacky events (Jello’s record collection is probably the strangest of anyones on the face of the Earth). Show some love to one of the pillars of the Punk Rock Pantheon, after all, there’s always room for Jello…in your wardrobe.  -Chris Shary
