I saw NoMeansNo only once. It was way back in the eighties (either 1986 or 1987). They were opening for the DC band Marginal Man at this club in Raleigh called the Brewery. They opened up as a duo, bass and drums. Right away they went for the throat: super powerful and energetic. Both of them (Rob and John Wright) sang. After a half dozen songs, this skinny kid gets onstage looking like Pee Wee Herman (that’s what I thought at the time) and he sings a song or two, jumping all over the place. This later was revealed to be Andy Kerr. Then he puts on this telecaster, turns it on and suddenly he has this guitar sound that’s like a combo of D. Boon and Steve Albini or something cool like that, and they blew my mind for the rest of the set.

Most of the songs were on the SEX MAD album, which is still my favorite NoMeansNo record. They were incredible. And they never came around here again I think. Because I read Maximum Rock N Roll, I knew where they were from, and later that night they stayed at the late Reed Mullins house where I talked to John Wright about the Neos. Turns out he recorded one of their singles. I think that’s what he said. Decades later, I sent a note to John while pitching this Metronome design that Charles helped me with, reminding him of that Neos conversation. Next thing I knew, he gave us permission to run with this! Thanks Neos for your help. Oh, and thanks to both John and Charles. We hope you enjoy this shirt. -Brian Walsby
