Your Flesh Magazine

The multifaceted brilliance of the Crass circle, the skanking DRI figure, the bespectacled face of Milo, the instant familiarity of the Misfits and COC skulls; some marks are instantly identifiable. If you were involved in the 80s-early 90s underground rock scene, The “Skull Buddy” ID of the almighty Your Flesh Magazine (RIP) is one such mark.

Founded in 1982 by Peter Davis, Ron Clark, and Bob Mould, Your Flesh covered the burgeoning Hardcore/ Punk/ Alternative music scenes of the pre-Nevermind, pre-internet era with bold wit, taste, and enthusiasm.

I remember the excitement of spotting a new issue of Your Flesh at the newsstand. I recall making lists of albums to purchase based on reviews featured in it’s pages. I wish I still had all of my old issues of this beloved magazine…but, of course, I don’t.

What I do have is the amazing opportunity to work with Peter and an assortment of my favorite visual artists on a series of limited edition Your Flesh T-shirts; all of which are featured HERE. We’ve done quite a few of them at this point.

But… let’s circle back to the image featured on this shirt. It’s the original Your Flesh “Skull Buddy” logo designed by co-founder Ron Clark. It’s crude, yet graphically sound and instantly recognizable as something smart, dangerous, and exciting.
