I was a small, hyperactive spazz of a kid who grew up in the rural Southeastern US. I was athletic, but I was small. My attention span was extremely limited and my patience was nil. I gravitated toward individual “sports” like BMX and skateboarding. Eventually my mom signed me up for rec soccer as she thought it might help me get some of my energy out. After a few games, it became obvious that my small stature didn’t really have a negative effect on my ability to progress and my speed and stamina were a definite advantage. I liked the open creativity of the play. The fact that the game rarely stopped, and the only way to keep possession of the ball and score was through skill (not brute strength) was also quite appealing to me. Not a lot of kids in 1980s rural south were interested in soccer. Like skateboarding and BMX, soccer (where I grew up) was a bit of an outsider sport. I was hooked, and to this day, I’m still a huge fan of the game.

In my late 20s, I was running Bifocal full time and living in a college town. Through conversations at our local dive bar hangout, I discovered that a lot of my friends and acquaintances shared my interest in the game and we eventually started a pick up soccer group. There was no jock attitude as most of the participants were artsy fartsy types and rock and rollers. There was, however, a lot of skill on display and eventually I sponsored a team… The Bifocal Media Melee. Many of my wife (Sonya) and I’s best friends came from this little group of weirdos kicking a ball at each other. This is the Bifocal Media Melee jersey. That is all.
