A few months ago, an old friend sent me a cassette tape recording of a radio show I did in the early 1990s. This particular show featured bands like Heroin, Antioch Arrow, Clikatat Ikatowi, Drive Like Jehu, Etc. Listening to the tape got me thinking about San Diego and the insanely cool output of music that’s come out of that place.

As the 90s progressed, more uniquely amazing underground rock music continued to pour out of the San Diego area, and It seemed that a lot of this output was coming from the Three One G record label. I’m a big fan of Three One G, and the Label’s owner (Justin Pearson); so it seems logical that I’ve taken every opportunity to work with Justin and bands that he’s involved with.

As can be expected, my thrift store cassette deck (from the early 2000s) and the 30 year old recording of my 1994 radio show eventually jammed, and I had to do a little bit of 1/8 inch tape doctoring. As I was winding the tape back up with a knife, this idea came to me. After a week or so of messing around with this design I pitched it to Justin and he loved it.

So… here you have it. This is what comes to mind when I think of the 1990s San Diego rock Scene: Sound, Style, Violence…BRING IT ON!!! -Charles Cardello/ Bifocal Media
