I was one of those typical suburban California latchkey kids of the late 70’s and early 80’s. ‘Totally normal family and life. Inside my mind though, I always felt a little different than other kids and peers. I was always interested in things on the fringe or other random weirdness. ‘Absolutely drawn to it. Obscure Monster movies, skateboarding, weird music, art, etc. By the time I was 13 I had also developed a love for all the new weird bands of the world. Devo and Dead Kennedys being tops on the list. I remember taking  a Sharpy and drawing the Alternative Tentacles logo (I had seen on a DK record) huge on the bottom of my old DT deck. There were other smaller band names and logos on there as well. I was pretty advanced at art for my age, so they were fairly accurate representations. One of the older kids saw my board and grabbed it. “Hey, Gavin, check this out!” Gavin grabs the board and looks it over…. ” Who’s is this? ” “Mine, I say” He smiles and tells me “it’s cool and I have good taste”. “We’re going to a half pipe around the corner. You should come along”.  I did… and well, that was the end of my life as it had been before that day and the beginning of everything it would be for the rest of my life. I was so lucky to grow up in San Jose during the 80’s skate boom. I got to skate with all the dudes and I got to see almost literally EVERY band you could ever want to see. One of those bands was The Faction. I NEVER missed a Faction set if I could help it. Good times indeed! -Mike Fisher
