“Adelaide Airport 1982”
- Artist Tony Lewis
Release # BFLD404
Limited to 500
I came across this photo of Devo on a fan page and I was immediately drawn to it. I had never seen it before; which was surprising given how great of an image this is. Considering the photo was taken in 1982… In Australia, my hopes of tracking down the photographer, getting permission from him, and clearing it with the band were slim. After a bit of Google detective work, I found Tony Lewis (the photographer) and emailed him through his website. He responded right away and was excited about making this shirt happen. Devo also loved the photo and were quick to give the go ahead. Thanks to Michael Pilmer (Devo’s merch manager) for helping make this happen! Here’s what Tony had to say about his photo:
In 1982 Devo were touring Australia. I went to Adelaide airport when they arrived with my friend and fellow photographer Paul Lakatos with the idea for this photo already planned. I laid on the ground outside the airport next to their waiting tour bus with a flash either side of my head, and when the band came out, they were kind enough to co-operate when Paul asked them to bend over the camera pointing straight up at them, and we got this kooky photo! It remains a big favorite from four decades of taking photos of bands and concerts.
We went to Devo’s concert that night and were blown away by the energy of their show, walking on treadmills while performing their songs. -Tony Lewis
