When someone brings up the ’90s underground rock scene there are a few things that immediately come to mind. Here’s my short list: House shows, festivals at VFW halls, zines, indie record labels, thrift store gas station work shirts, and amazing bands… like Jawbox. I’ve been a fan of this band since hearing their Grippe album in the early 90s and we’ve had them on our “must work with” list since we started doing the limited edition merch thing back in 2009. If you’re reading this, you’re likely familiar with the band already.

I initially reached out to Jawbox about working together via their Facebook page a few years ago. I never heard back, which is usually a good sign that the band is not interested. Imagine my excitement when I got an email (out of the blue) from Kim Coletta asking if we were still into the idea of doing a Jawbox tee. We were! I had gotten acquainted with Rob Myers when Jeff Nelson of Dischord Records sent us his way to collaborate on a Black Cat DC t shirt design. Rob knocked that one out of the park and he seemed like an obvious first choice when it came to this collaboration as he (like Jawbox) is a key feature of the DC art and music scene.

The gas station shirt was initially proposed by Rob, but I don’t think any of us thought we could actually pull it off. All of the pieces eventually fell into place, so here you have it. I’m not sure what else to say about this one other than JUST LOOK AT IT! WHAT A BEAUTY!!!  -Charles Cardello/ Bifocal Media
