Superchunk

A few weeks ago my 12 year old daughter asked me who my favorite band was. Speaking as an individual who’s entire career, hobbies, and social life have been completely dominated by music as long as I can remember; this is a hard question to answer. After a brief, internal deliberation I rattled off some names. Among the Bad Brains and the Public Enemy and Fugazi and Van Halen and The Kinks and Crass…. Etc… There was Superchunk.

Since recording their “No Pocky For Kitty” album (in it’s entirety) off the radio in the early 90s, I have been an enormous fan of this band. For over 30 years they’ve consistently put out great music, played amazing shows, and remained effortlessly cool.

We’ve worked with Superchunk on several projects over the years and I’m more than happy to be working with them on this Tom Hazelmyer design. Tom sent me this image on a postcard a year or so ago and we had it hanging on the mirror in our dining room. One morning on my way to work I grabbed it, snapped a pic with my phone, and sent it to Mac, Laura, and Tom asking if they would be down to do it as a shirt. They were, so here you have it.

Producing this tee reminds me of the excitement I felt hearing Superchunk for the first time, learning they were from my home state, seeing them at Cat’s Cradle in my teens, and meeting and working with them in my mid 20s. It’s the same excitement I feel when I play their records for my kids, or discover they’re released (yet another) amazing new set of songs.
