Spit Stix

Tim Leitch (AKA Spit Stix) first came to my attention as the drummer for the band Fear, out of Los Angeles. Fear were peers of bands like X, Black Flag, the Germs, the Bags…you get the idea. His drumming and prowess anchored and drove the band. You might say he was the engine of the band, as all good drummers tend to fall into that role.

While listening to FEAR THE RECORD (my third “punk” album purchase after Dead Kennedys and Black Flag), I would analyze Spit’s drumming and wonder “HOW IS HE DOING THIS?” His playing was great and sort of weird. He would throw in little tricky things on the straighter numbers, but would really fly on the weirder tunes like “Camarillo” or “We Destroy The Family”. This guy is an incredible drummer. Everyone with an ear knows this.

Flash forward forty or so years: Tim is back in Fear and has a new band. Nasalrod (from Portland), is really great and is probably an even better display of his prowess. Check them out.
